Design Goals
- Home -- "This is NOT a blog"
- establish: 1. topic & 2. era --> Havana, Cuba, mid-century (1940's-50's)
- SEO & targeted phrases, e.g. "cuba photos", "havana night life"
- Audience(s) plus how to reach 'em (break this down)
- academic
- travellers
- mid-century nuts: LA Conservancy, hipsters, Arclight crowd.
read: Lotta Living?, BoingBoing?
Ideas
- ...[the look] I wanted to express of the cool Rat Pack era sophistication of the 1950s. The cigar box image is great.
- a list of the table of contents would not be nearly as compelling as a vertical column of thumbnail images representing each chapter (with the chapter name next to it) that links to a page highlighting the chapter with cool images with captions).
Dumb Ideas (Buz's)
- have feedback form in a super footer on the pages. Yeah, trying to jen-up "community" but could be neat, especially if done on a dutch angled, vintage pre-Castro postcard.

"Quickie" To-Do MUSTS
- "If you're under 70, you'll need the book to know what we're missing." Jared Paul Stern. GQ USA Men.Style.com
- Then & Now Pictures!
- browser-baseline: Internet Explorer 6 & 7, re-verify Firefox & Safari
- IE header background (sub-pages), IE6 can't handle: div#header.tall so we'll be using div.tallHeader
- Confirm that clicking the amazon icon and purchasing a book results in a credit to yours truly
- IE6 relative font-sizes or pixels? OK, force px
- footer text
- reattach JS email protector
- photo gallery
- IE6 PNG bug hack
- reviews
- author photo (on new bg, home page)
- pull unused main nav links: "events"
- home -- end of "about the book" invite "explore"
- absolute links: 404 handler
- add the Havana URL up front on my new MySpace profile
- The brownish text is a bit hard to read under the heading "Explore the book." Can it be a bit lighter in color?
- ... [selects] chapter thumbnail images I'd like the chapter paragraph text to be bigger, more akin to the font size of the intro paragraph "About the Book" on the main page.
- When you are taken to the specific chapter page, such as Chapter 1
From Spanish Colony to Cuban Republic, the paragraph should be
surrounded by, or be in close proximity to, the four or five
medium-sized images associated with that chapter (identified by their
jpg names). Then each of these images should be "clickable" to a
larger version like in the photo gallery.
- I'd like that big, bright amazon button up near the top of the main page
- site stats
WBN & CBB List
- Make the book cover on the upper left of the main page clickable to the enlargement
- Change the top tab button "Photos" to "Photo Gallery"
- On the bottom left of the main page put the amazon selection before Powell's and the others because it's currently the only fully functional site for the book
- Make the "More Reviews..." button on the lower right main page clickable to the Reviews page
- Remove the bold words from the main page bullet points (i.e. Shanghai Theatre)
- Include a link to my MySpace page
- Eventually, include an interactive blog capability
- ms Gamms
- header quotes: style
- header quotes: rotate via Javascript
- Photos scrolling style
- body font -- see ILoveTypography.com
- Footer image(s)
- keep images from "coming soon" page on hidden part of new home page.
- top nav hover issues
- [better] big, bright amazon button near top of home page
- footer link colors
- shaded vertical divider in IE
- explore/chapters use 100's with large hovers? would be neat?
- lock down directories for browsing
- favicon
